Quick, what is your favorite pizza place in town? Do you have an immediate favorite, or does it depend on what you’re hungry for? Perhaps you’re craving a thin crust today, but tomorrow you might want a deep dish. Is there a sauce you prefer, or a cheese combo you desire? With so many variables when it comes to pizza, wouldn’t it be nice if there was some definitive way out there where you could determine, once and for all, which pizza joint serves up the best pie in Tucson? Well, you’re in luck, because a local pizza competition is kicking off soon, and, best of all, it’s all for charity.
Set to kick off this Saturday, May 27, the Pizza Throwdown and Dessert Duel will take place at Fresco Pizzeria & Pastaria. This has been a popular annual event designed to raise money for local restaurants. It was cooked up during the COVID pandemic as a way to provide funding for restaurants struggling with the forced shutdowns and limited seating available when guests were allowed to dine in. This year aims to be the biggest, and it provides you, and everyone else, with the opportunity to stop by, try pizza from shops around town, and vote on who really does have the best pizza in town.
Currently, pizzerias scheduled to take part in the Pizza Throwdown include Mama Louisa’s, Empire Pizza, Vero Amore, Zio Pepe, Flamme Pizza Nepolitana, Mama’s Pizza, Firetruck Pizza Company, Fresco, and Rocco’s Little Chicago. Every pizza restaurant taking part in the competition will prepare a pizza on-site.
Running from 6 PM until 8 PM, guests will get three drink tickets, plus pizza and dessert samples. Of course, you’ll be able to order other food and pick up additional drinks while you are there, should you need more food and beverages during the two hours.
It is recommended to purchase tickets early, as they are limited. Of course, at $50 a pop, it isn’t exactly the cheapest way to go about things, but it is all going to a good cause. Plus, how often are you able to enjoy pizza from most of the top pizza joints in Tucson, all in the same place?
You can buy tickets through the Eventbrite page. If you have not been to Fresco Pizzeria & Pastaria before, it is located at 3011 East Speedway Boulevard right here in Tucson. You can also stop by beforehand if you want to grab a pie to munch on as the competition progresses.
