There has been a wave of California restaurant migration into Arizona over the last several months. From chicken sandwich restaurants and sub joints all the way to purveyors of pizza, and there doesn’t appear to be anything slowing the restaurant movement down. For anyone looking to get their fix of Greek gyros, salads, and baklava, a new establishment recently opened up shop in the heart of downtown Phoenix.
Nick the Great, a Greek restaurant specializing in its gyros, has recently made the move from California to Arizona. While the restaurant is predominantly located throughout the Golden State, there has been an interesting movement eastward, with new restaurants popping up in Kansas, Texas, Utah, Nevada, and now Arizona. The Arizona destination can be found at 11 West Washington Street.
The menu is mostly made up of classic Greek staples with a slight twist. If you want a hot pita wrapped around your selection of meat, Nick the Great is the spot for you. You will find the classic gyro, which is made using a beef/lamb mixture (and is topped off with tomatoes, onions, tzatziki, as well as a side of french fries), a chicken gyro, pork, falafel, as well as pork souvlaki and chicken souvlaki. Souvlaki is simply a kind of meat that is prepared on a skewer. The pork and chicken souvlaki has a slightly different taste with the added grilling texture. If you are interested in more of a plate dinner, there are several options to choose from, including a souvlaki plate, a gyro plate, or a falafel plate. The plates come served with your selection of fries or rice, plus a side salad and extra pita bread. You can also order your gyro in bowl form, and there are several salads if you’d like to skip the pita bread altogether and opt for the healthiest alternative.
The french fries come in three varieties. There is the standard side of fries, which are seasoned with oregano and salt, Greek fries, which are seasoned with feta cheese, garlic, as well as green onions, and then the house special Nicks Fries, which come coated in feta, garlic, spicy yogurt, plus your choice of protein.
For anyone interested in stopping by and checking out the new menu, Nick the Great is open Sunday through Thursday from 11 AM until 9 PM, and on Friday and Saturday from 11 AM until 10 PM.
