Local Pizza Restaurant Opens New Location

Pizza chains from all around the country have landed in Arizona. You might be surprised that a large number of prominent chains originate in Michigan (Domino’s, Little Caesars, Marco’s, and Hungry Howies, to name a few). Despite the influx of pizza chains from the Midwest and other pockets of the country, what is often lost between slices of pepperoni and cheese is the fact that there is a state-wide pizza chain from right here in Arizona, that has been around for over 40 years now. While it doesn’t have the sheer number as the other top chains, it continues to grow, and it just announced a new location in metro Phoenix. 

Barro’s Pizza first started serving up slices of ‘za back in 1980. However, the recipes date back long before the initial opening, as everything from the crust to the sauce is based on Grandma Angelina Barro’s own personal recipes from Italy. In order to share her food with the world, her family decided to open the very first Barro’s Pizza. Technically, the first family restaurant launched in Chicago (where Grandma Angelina immigrated to) during the 1960s, followed by another in California, after Angelina decided to move to the Pacific Coast after calling Chicago home for 30 years. The family remained in California until 1980, when they moved to Mesa, Arizona. And, of course, the newest restaurant started the chain from there. 

For the most part, Barro’s Pizza has remained within the state (there is one location outside of Dallas. Because of this, it has become one of the more prominent pizza chains in the state. Outsiders might not know what is going on, but Arizona residents do. It is why it is one of the most decorated Pizza restaurants not only in metro Phoenix but throughout the Copper State. 

Guests can take advantage of the Made-To-Order pizza, which starts anywhere from a mini 8-inch pizza and goes all the way up to an X-Large 16-inch pizza. For those who would rather choose from the menu, there is the Barro’s Special, which is pepperoni, ham, mushroom, green pepper, and onion. The Vegetarian Special includes mushroom, onions, green pepper, black olives, and tomato, while the Mega Meat comes packed with pepperoni, ham, meatball, bacon, and sausage. 

The new location has opened in Chandler at 2935 South Alma School Road. It is Sunday through Thursday, from 10:30 AM until 10 PM, and on Friday and Saturday from 10:30 AM until 11 PM.

Burrito Restaurant From New Jersey Closes After 9 Months

Mexican chain restaurants from all around the country often turn their sights onto metro Phoenix as a possible expansion destination. Yes, there is a high volume of similar businesses doing well in the area, but what many of these external franchises fail to realize is it simply isn’t as easy as opening up shop. It isn’t an if you build it, they will come kind of thing. Unlike most other cities around the country, despite the abundance of Mexican food options in the area, the industry does a relatively good job of policing itself. It weeds out the locations that underperform with their food. Franchises coming to Phoenix need to be up to snuff, otherwise, their expansion dreams will fail. That is exactly what happened to one national chain that tried to make a go at it in the Valley.

Local Restaurant Hit With 18 Health Violations

It hasn’t been a great last few weeks for Tucson area restaurants. During their annual food health and safety inspections, a large number of these restaurants were hit with “needs improvement” grades, indicating the restaurants had major violations and needed to have these areas corrected, often in a matter of weeks. However, one particular restaurant stood out as the worst of the bunch, as it was hit with a probation inspection rating due to its 18 violations.

Few southern dishes are as unique as chicken and waffles. At first, it seems like an unusual combination, but when you think about it, pairing something savory, such as the chicken, with something sweet, in this case, the waffle (and its syrup), just seems to work. While there are a handful of destinations around metro Phoenix that do produce the dish, few originate in Atlanta, the city of the dish’s birth. Colorado Mexican Chain Restaurant Has Opened in Town

There’s no denying the love of Mexican food in the Valley. Most of the restaurants around town are independently owned. They are run by families who want to both make a living as well as share their love of food with the community. And yet, for whatever reason, entities from outside states look at Phoenix and deem it the ideal destination to open satellite locations. Despite the sheer volume of authentic Mexican food, these restaurants move in, as if there’s a gold rush on Mexican cuisine in Arizona. This is happening once again, as a restaurant chain from out of state has moved in and set up shop.

Main Street in downtown Mesa has seen considerable change in recent years. One of the most recent apartment and storefront projects on the strip includes The GRID, which will help bring additional rental units to the downtown district, as well as new destinations for visitors and locals alike to enjoy. One restaurant downtown Mesa will be adding is a metro Phoenix favorite, as it has three destinations spread out around the Valley. This particular restaurant though won’t be a stand-along location, as a connected speakeasy will open alongside the new eatery as well.

After Closing All 97 Locations, Restaurant Returning to Town

During the COVID-19 pandemic, a number of restaurants didn’t attempt to tread water and serve customers via take-out and delivery orders. They simply closed up shop. Some returned after the forced shutdowns were lifted, while others remained closed. It often depended on the kind of restaurant. Buffet-style restaurants were not able to function in their same way during the pandemic, so most of these locations had little to no course of action, other than to fully close. One particular restaurant chain decided to shutter all 97 restaurants around the country, not just for the duration of the pandemic, but for good. This affected a number of locations in Arizona, including right here in Tucson. However, the restaurant, now under new management, has made some changes, and it now plans on returning to Tucson in the coming fall.

Local Restaurant Forced to Close by Landlord after 12 Years

It is hard enough for restaurants to survive these days without added, unnecessary hiccups. After dealing with the forced shutdowns back in 2020 for COVID, it has been one issue after another, ranging from product shortages to workers employment issues, and now inflation is bringing all of that to a head. And yet, there has been an additional burden popping up time and time again, especially in metro Phoenix, that has forced more than a handful of restaurants to close over the last year: landlords. Despite the cost of residential property flatlining and dropping drastically around the Valley, landlords throughout the region are attempting to increase what they charge tenants, which, as one local, longtime restaurant has shown, is causing premature shutdowns.
