While the magazine print industry has dwindled over the last decade or so a number of mainstays continued publishing content that generations of readers continue to read. This includes Esquire magazine. The publishing titan puts out a number of articles that continue drawing interested readers into the fold. This includes its annual “The Best New Restaurants” list. This list details a handful of the best and brightest restaurants to open anywhere in the United States. This year’s list, which is the 40th edition of the list, is no different. However, it just happens to include a metro Phoenix restaurant within its highlighted “best new restaurants.”
In celebration of its 40th printing, Esquire decided to include 40 restaurants in its spread. Restaurants from Main to California are included in the list, as well as an eclectic array of culinary styles and cuisines. Valentine, out of Phoenix, was the state’s lone representative on the list of the 40 newest restaurants in the country (ranked 17).
The majority of restaurants found on the list fall under the fine-dining category. While the dinner menu at Valentine absolutely can be considered high-end, the restaurant doesn’t limit itself to an evening-only offering. In fact, the restaurant is open throughout the day as it throws open its doors to great guests with pastries and coffee starting at 7 AM before a daily brunch is offered at 9 AM. The restaurant is open Wednesday through Sunday from 7 AM until 2 AM.
Valentine very much is an ode to Arizona and the unique culinary styles the state calls its own. Just about everything on the menu is locally sourced, which means it does change at various times of the year to go along with what is in season. The dinner menu is broken down into “Bark Snack, Small, and Large” options. For bar snacks, guests can order mesquite-smoked sweet and savory nuts, warm citrus marinated olives, white Sonoran wheat pretzels, and wood-fired dates. For the small selection, visitors will find a little gem salad with sunflower vinaigrette and goatija cheese, a shrimp cocktail with guajillo cocktail sauce, plus grilled Chula oysters and pork ribs. The large menu includes elote pasta (house-made tagliarini, asiago, crispy corn, and Arbol), seared trout filets (with wild rice pilaf, dill, pickled onion, and jicama), and a dry-aged Arizona Wagyu tomahawk (served with pork belly tepary beans and huitlacoche tortillas).
Valentine is located at 4130 North 7th Avenue in Phoenix.
