When it comes to fine dining experiences, Phoenix has its share of options. When you want a casual or even elevated dinner with all the show and pomp, there are plenty of options to choose from. And yet, if you are someone that enjoys eating out and sampling the latest offerings opening around the Valley, it’s always nice when a new restaurant opens up, especially when it has a demonstrated track record in other areas around the world. The latest addition to the Phoenix restaurant scene does exactly that, as it has arrived with an impressive following out of Palm Springs.
Sandfish Sushi & Whiskey has officially opened after making the trek out of one desert and into another. Owner Engin Onural is one of the most respected chefs and owners in the West Coast sushi world, as he looks for ways to push the boundaries of his craft while offering guests something both familiar and unique. This is where Sandfish Sushi & Whiskey comes from. Having previously opened other sushi restaurants in Southern California back in 2011, he decided to combine his love of sushi with that of whiskey, a combo that doesn’t often go together. Guests to the newly minted restaurant will discover an array of sushi rolls as well as a well-stocked whiskey bar.
Some of the signature rolls for the restaurant include the Sandfish Roll, which consists of spicy tuna, crab meat, and avocado, topped with lightly fried potato threads, spicy aioli, teriyaki sauce, microgreens, green onions, and finished with a black truffle zest. There is the California Dreamin roll, which is crab meat and avocado topped with spicy tuna, spicy aioli, and teriyaki sauce, and then the Steak roll, which is shrimp tempura, crab meat, and avocado, topped with thinly sliced and seared New York steak, served with Salanova salad.
For guests who are hungry for something other than sushi, there is a collection of signature dishes, which includes Japanese Pork Belly Bao Buns, Albacore Tataki, and Hamachi Kama. And, of course, for the whiskey drinkers out there looking to sample something new, Sandfish Sushi & Whiskey likely has the largest collection of Japanese whisky (with nearly 50 options), not to mention a healthy offering of Scotch, American, and Rye whiskey.
The new restaurant is located at 4232 North 7th Avenue in Phoenix. Seating is limited so it is highly recommended that guests make a reservation before attending dinner (which can be done directly through the website).
