Metro Phoenix, as well as the rest of Arizona, is often the center of attention when it comes to traditional Mexican cuisine. Different from the Tex-Mex found in Texas, the New Mexican variants of our state to the east, and the beach-inspired offerings of tacos in San Diego, Arizona has some of the finest examples of Mexican food found throughout Mexico. However, beyond this culinary style, other culinary offerings are fewer and further between. So, with the opening of a new French restaurant, those in search of alternative dining opportunities can rejoice.

St. Urbans isn’t a direct take on French cuisine. Management refers to the restaurant as a “concept”, much like it does the other restaurants under its umbrella, including Sweet Provisions, Urban, Collins Bros. Chophouse, and Arcadia. St. Urban brings the lighter, fresh elements of French cuisine and helps simplify it for a local pallet. While this might disappoint those who are familiar with French food and who have traveled extensively throughout France, St. Urbans should provide a welcoming introduction to some of the flavors that are prevalent throughout the European nation.

The menu includes several items, with something for everyone. The Small Plates section of the menu features caramelized onion dip, cold smoked salmon tartare, and a Fromage & charcuterie board. For individuals looking to enjoy lighter flatbreads, St. Urbans offers The Provencal  (mozzarella, vine tomatoes, capers, herbs de Provence, and roasted garlic olives), and Chicken Pesto Caprese (mozzarella, vine tomatoes, torn basil, Maldon sea salt, balsamic reduction, and extra virgin olive oil). As for the larger entrees, the menu features a roasted pork panini, wild mushroom lasagna, spitfire chicken breast, and shaved prime rip press.

There is a daily happy hour that runs from 4 to 6 PM. It includes $5 beers, $9 wines by the glass, and $10 sangria. Food specials include garlic & Fromage flatbread for $10, caramelized onion dip for $8, pine nut pesto tartine for $7, chicken liver pate for $11, classic shrimp cocktail for $12, and freshly shucked oysters (half dozen) for $16.

St. Urbans is located at 5538 North 7th Street in Phoenix. It is open Monday and Tuesday from 4 PM until 9 PM, and Wednesday through Saturday from 4 PM until 10 PM. The restaurant is closed on Sundays. Gift cards are currently available through the St. Urbans website, and individuals interested in applying for a job can do so directly through the website as well.
