For residents of Gilbert, there are a number of restaurants that have been serving community members quality food over the past several years. However, one of those restaurants has announced it will close, which means anyone hungry for a slice of pizza will now need to look elsewhere in metro Phoenix for a slice.

Pomo Pizzeria made the announcement official late last week on the company’s Instagram page, announcing to its Gilbert patrons that, “it is with a heavy heart that we (are) announcing the closing of our Gilbert location.”

The restaurant did not provide additional information on why the Gilbert location is closing down. However, it did remind guests that there are still other locations that will remain open, including restaurants in downtown Phoenix, Biltmore, and Scottsdale.

The Gilbert location, which has been situated in the Heritage District, has been slinging pizza since 2015. However, it might be best known for having one of the largest patios in Gilbert, which made it an excellent location for patrons wanting to enjoy food and a drink while outside.

The Pomo Pizzeria is a local chain that hails directly from Italy. Stefano Fabbri worked as a chef in Italy before moving to the United States in 2009. A year later, he opened the very first Pomo Pizzeria in Scottsdale. However, baking did not start with Stefano. It started with his grandfather, who opened a small bakery in Emilia Romagna, Italy back in 1949. The passion for baking and the culinary arts was passed down, so when Stefano moved to Phoenix in 2009, he had the desire to open his own restaurant.

The original Scottsdale location closed in 2013 as Pomo Pizzeria moved to downtown Phoenix. A second location opened just six months later as it returned back to Phoenix as it took over a larger, 4,000 square foot space. The Gilbert location opened in 2015, and then at the end of the year, a Glendale location opened as well.

The pizza served at Pomo Pizzeria is so authentic that the Associazione Verace Pizza Napoletana, an organization out of Italy that awards pizzerias around the globe with an official seal of approval for authenticity, was given to Pomo Pizzeria. The chain was also awarded the Best New Restaurant in 2010 by Phoenix Magazine, the Best New Pizzeria in 2011 by AZ Central, and the Best Pizza Neighborhood in 2012, and it has received a Food 26 rating by Zagat.

While the Gilbert location is no more, guests are still welcome to visit one of the other locations when the craving for official Neapolitan pizza hits.
