Do you miss that old feeling of being a kid in a candy store? There was something exciting as a kid walking into such a shop. It came with infinite possibilities, and best of all, you didn’t have all the worries that come with adulthood weighing you down. Wouldn’t you like to experience that, at least one more time? Well, now you can, and all with an adult twist.

The Mexicano has officially launched its “Build Your Own Margarita” service, which allows guests to fully customize and build their own margarita from the ground up. The restaurant claims it is the only restaurant in the world to offer this. Whether that is true or not is difficult to authenticate, but it is at least the only restaurant in greater Phoenix that does have this kind of service.

At the Mexicano, if you’re interested in building your own margarita, you start with the basics. Do you want it frozen or on the rocks? From there, you’ll determine if you want any added flavors beyond the traditional offering. Flavor add-ons include strawberry, prickly pear, passion fruit, agave, and spicy mango.

Now that the cocktail itself is being mixed, what kind of glass would you like? You can have the large, goblet glass, or if you want to feel like a kid in a candy store, you’ll opt for the pinata. Yes, a pinata. This is a miniature burro that is filled with candy while also coming with a shot of tequila slipped into a side saddlebag.

With glass selected, how would you like it rimmed? Do you want to go with the traditional salt? Or maybe you’re interested in Tajín, or even sugar. Can’t decide? You can combine the options.

Lastly, and this is where you truly let your inner child go wild, you get to select toppings. If you’ve ever been to a build your own bloody mary bar this is along the same lines. But far more sugar-centric. Yes, there are options like blueberries, grapefruit, lemons, limes, pineapple, and even jalapeños, but you can also add cotton candy, gummy worms, and all kinds of other candies, making it possible to bring in your favorite childhood favorites and decorate an adult-favorite beverage.

The Mexicano is owned and operated by the Maggiore Group, which runs restaurants including Hash Kitchen, The Sicilian Butcher, and The Sicilian Baker. If you’re interested in checking out the build your own margarita, you can stop by The Mexicano at 4801 East Cactus Road in Scottsdale.
