Hungry for a slice of pizza this weekend? A local Italian restaurant has decided to spin off a secondary location and transition into a pizza-central destination. So, if you’ve been itching to try a new pizza and live in the southeastern part of Mesa, you’re in luck.
Pacino’s has been serving up casual Italian food to the Valley for nearly a decade. And while other restaurants look to open secondary locations after just a year or two, owner Frank Spaccarelli was comfortable maintaining and operating the single location. However, over the last few years, he’s had the itch to open a pizza-specific restaurant, where he could focus on Italian pizzas instead of the larger menu found at Pacino’s. This became the brainchild of Rocky’s Got Pizza. The restaurant, which is named for his grandson, is taking over the corner of 4984 South Power Road (Suite 103) from Zella’s Pizza and Cheesesteaks, which closed up shop not long ago.
Mr. Spaccarelli is no stranger to operating restaurants in greater Phoenix. He has been in the restaurant management business for nearly 40 years. And yet his love for making pizza has been around for far longer than that. While many pizza concepts popping up now are more spur-of-the-moment openings with owners having very little experience actually making pizza, Frank started cooking with his mother as a child. His (now ex) father-in-law worked with him and taught him how to make pizza, including the sauce and the dough, from scratch. Since his childhood, Frank has continued to tinker with pizzas and looked for ways to bring more flavor into the crust, including the infusion of fresh garlic into the dough. It is this experience and passion for pizza (as well as his grandson) that has brought about the launch of Rocky’s Got Pizza.
The restaurant is open Sunday through Thursday, from 11 AM until 9 PM, and on Friday and Saturday from 11 AM until 10 PM. The pizza utilizes a New York style of crust, with a thinner, chewy crust, instead of the larger pan pizzas or the thin, crunch California style of crust. In addition to pizzas, Rocky’s Got Pizza also sells wings in a number of flavors, several salads (such as a mozzarella Caprese, mixed antipasto, and classic Caesar), as well as several appetizers, like toasted ravioli, mac and cheese bites, and garlic cheese sticks, all of which are available for delivery or sit-down orders.
