Greater Phoenix is home to several under-the-radar restaurants. Locations where patrons can find excellent food, friendly staff, and a setting far different from what large chains can offer. Coming in 2022 though, one long-standing local favorite will close its doors for good.
House of Tricks in Tempe has been serving the public for 34 years. Owner Bob and Robin Trick have themselves been in the food business for 50 years. However, after all the ups and downs of the past few years, The Tricks have decided they would rather set their sights on retirement than the continued strain of running a restaurant. They have since announced they will close the doors to House of Tricks in June of 2022.
There is no chance of passing the restaurant down to family members or to sell the restaurant itself to interested parties. The building was sold earlier in December, and plans to convert the restaurant into something else are currently underway. While no official announcements have been made regarding what will take the place of House of Tricks, part of the sale agreement ensured the restaurant would remain open and serve the public through June of next year.
This gives fans of the long-standing restaurant time to stop by and enjoy a few final meals. Friends can also wish Bob and Robin well in their future plans while visiting the restaurant.
When the couple first opened their restaurant in 1987, they wanted it to feel inviting, as if they were inviting friends into their own home. They also had a favorite restaurant to visit in Jerome, called “The House of Joy.” So, they decided to put their own twist on the name and dub it, “House of Tricks.”
The restaurant is housed in a 1920s cottage that is ordained with natural trees and plenty of greenery. The outdoor patio is one of the many reasons locals fell in love with the restaurant over the years. Later, in 1994, the restaurant expanded, purchasing the 1903 constructed adobe home next door.
The closing of the restaurant will leave an award-winning legacy. It was named the Best Romantic Restaurant in 2018 by the Phoenix New Times. It has received the Trip Advisor Certificate of Excellence six different years, Phoenix Magazine named it one of the 50 Best Restaurants, The Culture Trip named it one of the 10 best local restaurants, and Ranking Arizona lists it as one of the top five restaurants in Arizona for contemporary dining.
If you want to visit House of Tricks before it closes next year, you can find it at 114 East 7th Street in Tempe.
