For 50 years eegee’s has been a Tucson restaurant staple. The fast-food joint, which is best known for its grinder sandwiches, ranch french fries, and frozen beverages, has remained in the Old Pueblo for much of its existence, opening dozens of stores throughout the region. However, after requests to move up the highway and set down in The Valley of the Sun, eegee’s has finally turned its eyes on metro Phoenix with several new locations. And now, the newest on the east side of the Valley is just about ready for business.

The latest restaurant rendition of eegee’s is plumped down in Mesa, right on 1460 South Crimson Road, which is close to the US 60 entrance. The restaurant is scheduled to open on Tuesday, December 14. And while eegee’s did open a restaurant earlier in the summer in Gilbert, this particular eegee’s is special, in that it is the first of any restaurant, including those in Tucson, that take advantage of a brand new building design. It features a hip, throw-back appearance to the building, all while remaining true to its fun color scheme.

The building will have a drive-through window, a walk-up window, plus an indoor dining space with garage-door windows, making it possible for an indoor/outdoor setup when the weather is cool enough. There is also ample parking, so for anyone that wants to enjoy themselves and not simply grab their food and go, this makes the restaurant a viable sit-down eating option.

For many who have either spent a considerable amount of time in Tucson or who have just stopped by the restaurant on the way back north, the menu will be familiar. For those who have not yet had the pleasure of eating from the Arizona-based chain, there are several items available on the menu. The grinders are perfect hand-held size, made using freshly baked bread. However, the ranch french fries is the menu item that routinely steals the show (as well as wins “Best French Fries” during the annual “Best of the Best” voter awards in Tucson).

The frozen drink, known as an eegee, is the beverage that started it all. Eegee’s started as a small stand selling the frozen lemonade drink 50 years ago. Since then a lot has changed, but the frozen beverage remains the same (with several new flavors) and is an excellent way to beat the Arizona heat any time of the year.
