Save Cash And Support a Good Cause With The Great Tucson Takeout!

Greyson F

It’s that time of year again.

The annual El Rio Foundation “Block Party” is back, although this year it is a bit different from its usual offering.

The El Rio Community Health Center started back in 1970 through a collaborative effort of Tucson communities and non-profit organizations. The group’s mission is to improve the overall health and wellbeing of all Tucson residents. To do this the health center looks for ways to raise funds throughout the year. One of its most successful annual fundraiser events is its El Rio Block Party.

This year, the block party has gone virtual as it is currently running until March 6. Today, Tuesday is the Great Tucson Takeout. Throughout town, restaurants are looking to help give back to the El Rio Foundation as a portion of the sales will be donated back to the foundation. These restaurants are offering special deals and offers. There are a number of restaurants (you can find the full list and specific offers right here), but some of the highlights include Barrio Carro (offering 10% off takeout orders), Beyond Bread (offering 10% off online orders with the ElRio coupon code), Brother John’s (15% off food orders), Elliott’s on Congress (free house vodka shooter for every $10 spent), El Charro (10% off all takeout orders), and Casino Del Sol (25% off all to-go orders).

There are other events throughout the rest of the week. On Wednesday the El Rio Foundation, which is the fundraising branch of the El Rio Community Health Center, officially turns 20. There will be updates and additional information regarding this celebration through the organization’s Facebook page

On Thursday it is “Thank You El Rio” day. The employees have been on the front lines of the COVID-19 pandemic since the beginning. For over a year the staff has done everything they can to help the local community battle, as many of those El Rio helps do not have the same kind of health options as others in the community. So Thursday will be the time to send out thank-you notes or to hashtag “#thanyouelrio” on social media in order to not only show support for the organization but to also raise awareness for the organization and everything it does for the local Tucson community.

On Friday it is Vecinos Cares Day. The organization will head out to offer up some “surprises” for families in the community. These surprises will be provided by the Children’s Dental Fund. One area of a child’s health that is often overlooked due to lack of finances and resources is their dental health. To assist with this, El Rio does partner with other dental organizations to try and do whatever it can to address this issue. So make sure to watch the organization’s Facebook page on Friday to see how it surprises several families around the community.

The final day of the El Rio Foundation Block Party will be Saturday, with a special virtual game night. Beginning at 6:30 PM the night will be packed with several games and prize-winning contests. You’ll want to join the party via Zoom. You’ll also need to register for the event through the El Rio Vecinos website. It’s easy to do and only takes a few moments.

If you can give back, now is the perfect time to do so. The El Rio Vecinos fundraiser is designed to bring in money to support the programs the El Rio Foundation providers over the course of the year. Up through the end of the Block Party, every dollar donated will be matched, up to $20,000. This money will go toward the Children’s Dental Program. The sponsor organizations matching the donations include Blue Cross Blue Shield Arizona, Tucson Federal Credit Union, Crest Insurance Group, and Pacific Premier Bank.
