New Pizza Restaurant Coming Soon
The Mercardo District has long been a unique, eclectic, and fun side of Tucson, tucked away and yet close to it all. It’s one of those locations visitors to the city rarely see, which helps focus all the attention on locals. There’s a charm to the central courtyard, as the majority of shops and restaurants open up to it, with patrons pooling out as they listen to music while sipping coffee or enjoying a cocktail with dinner. Coming this fall, there will be a new addition to the ever-evolving district, as guests will be able to not only enjoy pizza with everything else Mercado District has to offer but pizza by the slice.

Certain failed businesses can be flipped relatively easily. Office and retail space takes very little altering for the new business to move in and open to customers. Failed restaurants can require some renovations, depending on what kind of new restaurant is moving in, but still, restaurants take over failed restaurants all the time. One of the biggest problems though, when it comes to renovating town areas, is when gas stations close up shop. While the fuel tanks are eventually emptied, it still leaves environmental issues, not to mention a host of material that needs to be removed. For new businesses to move in, there are added environmental tests required to ensure there aren’t any fuel leaks into the soil. It is why, when a gas station shutters, its carcass remains, the building is picked over as windows are boarded up and graffiti is tagged all over its remaining skeleton. One particular gas station has sat, closed up, for some time in Flagstaff, but that is all about to change in the coming months.

Unless you are an avid mall shopper (or just really love hitting up Hobby Lobby), you might have missed one of the newest additions to the local restaurant scene. It opened a few weeks back with little fanfare, although this might have been due to its national brand recognition so it doesn’t need to have the massive celebrations when it opens. Regardless, if you are a resident in greater Flagstaff, a new and yet familiar restaurant is now up and running on the east side.

It has been all quiet over at Noble Hops over the past several weeks. The restaurant’s social media presence all but went silent, and events at the restaurant faded to nothing. Things are a bit cleaner now though as the 445 South Alvernon Way Reid Park location has officially closed its doors for good.

What’s your comfort food? What allows you to sit back, relax, and exhale deeply after a long day of work (or maybe a long day of dealing with the kids)? Do you gravitate toward Southern soul food? Maybe a big heaping bowl of Italian pasta is your go-to? Perhaps you’d prefer to curl up with a half-gallon of ice cream and just eat until you’re comfortable and your mouth is showing early signs of frostbite? Everyone has food that helps relax them and puts them at ease. Sometimes it’s not strictly food. There are those who prefer to pair a glass of malbec with their triple chocolate ice cream, while others just like the first burning sip of a Scottish single malt after everyone else has gone to bed. Or, if you’re a beer fan, a tall, frosty glass of your favorite German beer, complete with comforting sausages, pretzels, and everything else designed to help put your mind in Bavaria. If that sounds like you and you’re in metro Phoenix, good news because a new beer hall and restaurant is opening in about a month.

It is always an interesting move when one style of restaurant moves in and replaces the exact same kind of restaurant that failed not long before. Whether it is a pizza joint replacing a failed pizza joint, or a burger barn replacing another burger barn, these new restaurants are betting big that the restaurant completely failed based on the quality of the old location’s food, and not on the location. This is exactly what has happened with one address in greater Phoenix, as a popular BBQ restaurant is moving in following the closure of a different BBQ restaurant.

There haven’t been too many major restaurant closures over the last several months, which is a good sign for the rebounding industry. Of course, with all the major events running through greater Phoenix since the beginning of the year (basically starting with the College Football Playoff game on New Year's Eve and continuing through much of the calendar year thus far), there has been a solid influx of outsider money coming in to help sustain restaurants. With the summer months right around the corner, fewer residents will be out and about. While summer is often the busiest time of year for other parts of the country, the incredible heat, not to mention snowbirds leaving for the season, makes it one of the low points in terms of sales. Due to this, you will begin seeing a number of restaurants calling it quits now. That includes one metro Phoenix burger joint.

In the world of restaurant health reviews, there are a number of ratings offered to establishments here in greater Tucson. For both consumers and owners, the last thing you want to see is a business failing its inspection. This demonstrates all kinds of issues, and is a red flag for eaters, while potentially being devastating for the owners. Failing a health inspection isn’t exactly the easiest thing to do here in Tucson either. Restaurants are given second chances to make the necessary corrections. First, if a restaurant is deemed to “need improvement,” a second inspection is scheduled, typically within two weeks of the original inspection. If, however, the necessary improvements are not made during this time, the restaurant will then receive a failing grade. That is exactly what happened to one local restaurant.

There is no shortage of chicken restaurants opening up around metro Phoenix. Whether in wing or sandwich form, these things have been popping up like weeds over the last few years. Just in the previous month alone, there have been several California chicken transplants opening their doors, in addition to others from the Midwest. Most of the restaurants tend to offer something similar, with the only real difference being the decor and the breading used on the chicken. There’s a reason chicken sandwiches are growing in popularity, but it is a breath of fresh air when one delivers unique flavors and a new twist on the classic dish. Thankfully, that is precisely what has happened with a brand-new chicken restaurant.

When the food is good, a restaurant can get away with many things. Poor location, interior decorating, and in the case of one small joint in metro Phoenix, no marketing. It forces the restaurant to rely completely on word of mouth, so when the restaurant does well, it says something about the establishment. For one Valley area Mexican restaurant, business has been so good, despite having no marketing or online presence, it has officially expanded to a second location.
