One of Bucks County PA's biggest employers has told its 2,400 workers to vaccinate against COVID-19 by late October or they will be fired -- a move designed to "protect and serve" the public, it said, and one that could set a precedent for other bosses.

County of Bucks employees in all departments and in the court system are required to have at least one dose of vaccine, or to have filed a request for medical or religious exemption, by Sept.17. Full vaccination is required by Oct. 29, said the county, which also noted non-county vendors and contractors working in county buildings also must be vaccinated.

"When you work for your local, county, state or federal government, the job comes with an inherent duty and commitment to protect and serve the public," said Diana Ellis-Marseglia, chair, Bucks commission

ers. "Getting vaccinate protects not just our employees -- and we need healthy employees in order to assist the public -- but also serve to strengthen our community's resistance to this killer virus, keeping everyone safe, keeping kids in school and keeping businesses open."

County employees who are not exempted must receive two doses either of Pfizer or Moderna vaccines, or one dose of Johnson & Johnson vaccine by Oct. 29.

Said the county: "Those who do not comply with the vaccine mandate will be released from employment. Vaccination also will be required for all new hires."

The same mandate was issued earlier this week by President Judge Wallace H. Bateman Jr. for court employees, and the county Department of Corrections today enacted the same rules for workers.
