Mackenzie Jenkins was outside sitting on a swing last Saturday evening when she heard a dog barking and saw smoke coming from her neighbor's home, according to the Cape Coral Fire Department.

"She quickly called 9-1-1 and told dispatchers what she saw. When firefighters were able to make entry, they knew to search for a dog thanks to the information provided by Mackenzie," a spokesperson of the department wrote in a Facebook post.

When the firefighters entered the home to find the puppy, she was unresponsive. However, Lee County EMS cooled her and provided oxygen, and by the time the fire in her home was put out, the sweet puppy was up and walking around.

Without Mackenzie's quick thinking and call to action, it is very possible that the puppy would not have made it, and even more possible that the fire would have spread to more homes in her neighborhood.

Firefighters presented Mackenzie with a Community Recognition Coin for her actions which not only prevented further damage to her neighbor’s home from the fire but also saved their dog's life.

Mackenzie has proven to us once and for all that heroes come in all shapes, sizes, and even ages! Thank you, Mackenzie, you're a hero to us all and we can't wait to see what you do next.
