Apartment resident, who does laundry at 6 am, shamed by neighbor for being ‘inconsiderate and rude’

Living in an apartment complex can get complicated when rules and regulations are ignored, as one Redditor recently experienced with a neighbor in his complex.

The author explains that he had awoken early one morning to use the coin-operated washer and dryer in a dedicated laundry room due to its popular and heavy use. He explains further:

“It just so happens that the laundry room is right next to my neighbor’s (right below me) unit. I thought it would be a good idea to do my laundry this morning as soon as I woke up, because it would give me a surefire chance of being able to use them. Well, after loading my clothes, and a couple of flights up and down the stairs later, my neighbor came out of his unit as soon as I was opening the laundry room door. He “sternly whispered” at me saying, “Yo, it’s barely after 6:00 AM, I’m trying to sleep, I can hear the washing machine running through my walls”.”

According to the Apartment Dynamics blog, apartment building logistics can be complicated due to the commonality of the residents. Navigating quieter times and fair use of limited resources can be difficult. Respectful and appropriate use of shared amenities is important in making sure everyone in the community is able to function peacefully, as detailed by Roomsurf.

The author apologized for the disturbance, but his neighbor was not convinced. He continues:

“I replied, “I’m sorry if it disturbed you, but I wanted to be able to do laundry at a time when no one else was using it.” He replied with, “I’m telling {our landlord’s name} about this, this is ridiculous.” He then slammed his door shut. I just took a quick look at our lease agreement, and I see that our quiet hours are 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM on Sundays. Also, I didn’t see any explicit quiet hours for the laundry rooms.”

This incident has left the author rather confused and frustrated, as he concludes with:

“I wanted to use the washer and dryers early in the morning because no one else would be using them. I got yelled at because I woke someone up early which was ‘ridiculous’ of me to do, and they’re going to complain to our landlord about it. I’m really confused, I was outside the quiet hours...”

What do you think?

Was the author in the wrong to do laundry so early in the morning, as especially as it kept his neighbor up?

Or was the author entirely justified to do his laundry at 6 am, since he was doing so outside of the quiet hours in the agreement, and he wasn’t being loud on purpose?
