A 35-year-old man starts off that his wife is pregnant with their first child, and leading up to the birth, they’ve been thinking of names to call their unborn son. They can’t quite agree, as he explains:
“She's due in 2 weeks and I am beyond excited because this would be my first child and I've always wanted to be a dad. Yesterday, we were in bed together, talking about our baby. All of a sudden she jumps up excited with a huge smile on her face. She told me to stay on the bed because she had a surprise for me. She went into our closet and grabbed a box. It was decorated with ribbons and bows so I assumed it was a gift for me. She handed it to me with the same big grin on her face. It was obvious she was excited to see my reaction.”
Choosing a baby name is a difficult decision because it will be a part of your child's identity for the rest of their life, as explained by Happiest Baby. It can be overwhelming to choose a name that will stand the test of time and reflect both parents' personalities and values.
When the author opened the box, inside there was a blue onesie with the name "Bartholomew" stitched in the center in cursive. The father-to-be was taken aback as he did not expect such an "old” name and couldn't help but laugh. He continues:
“I asked her what it meant and she said 'Surprise!! That's going to be his name. She sounded so happy and enthusiastic so I knew she was serious. I burst out laughing to the point of tears.”
His reaction did not go over well with his wife who had chosen the name in honour of her late grandfather. She became enraged, prompting him to explain that he was not trying to be disrespectful but rather wanted her to think it through:
“I told her that she should think about this because it's an outdated name. But furious, she started yelling at me and stormed out, leaving to stay with her mom.”
After the argument, other family members contacted the author and told him that he was wrong to have dismissed the name so quickly.
The post has sparked an intense debate among readers. One user wrote:
“There's no need to disrespect each other in a disagreement. If it was something the husband really disliked and the wife was really attached to, they should have taken the time to discuss it further.”
What do you think?
Was the author justified to laugh at his wife’s name suggestion since it is such an outdated name that the child might be made fun of for?
Or was the author being unkind to his wife by laughing at her idea for naming their child, and should have been more compassionate and understanding?
