Man Refuses Wife Credit Card to Buy Maternity Clothes

Which items are necessary for pregnancy?

Anyone who's ever been pregnant before will tell you that the process isn't exactly sunshine and rainbows. With hormonal changes, general physical discomfort, and the pregnant person's body just changing in dramatic ways, there's a lot of adjustment and frustration that can come along with pregnancy.

With that said, it's not uncommon either, as over 3 million babies are born in the US every year. But in order to prepare for a baby's arrival, there are many things that people have to collect and gather to get through the pregnancy. Maternity clothes are one of those realities.

This sort of situation was highlighted in a recent online post in which a woman asks her husband to loan her his credit card so that she can buy more maternity clothes, and he absolutely refuses to do it.

Which items are necessary for pregnancy?

A Reddit post published on March 12th, reported on by Shira Li Bartov from Newsweek, has gone viral with 9,800 upvotes and 4,400 comments.

The author begins his post by explaining that his wife is 28 weeks pregnant right now, and has to stay on bed rest due to pregnancy complications. He adds as well that they are struggling financially, and that since the complications arose his wife is not able to work, not even from home.

He clarifies that he has a full-time job as a clerk at a law firm, but he's had to take on a second job at a garage as well as taking on household chores while his wife is on bed rest. He explains that they're barely making ends meet with the bare necessities.

With that said, the wife recently asked her husband for his credit card so that she could buy maternity clothes, but he reminded her that she already has four sets of custom-made maternity clothes. He also offered her some of his old clothes from the attic, but she didn't respond well to this suggestion.

It isn't easy to be pregnant, let alone bedridden.

For a variety of reasons, such as high blood pressure, risk of premature labor, and also bleeding, the American Pregnancy Association explains that this may be a cause for a pregnant person being on bed rest. With that said, it isn't easy to be confined to one's bed.

The wife started to cry and told her husband he was being ‘cheap’ by not letting her use the credit card for clothes. The author reminded her that maternity clothes are not fully necessary right now, and their finances are very tight.

There are other purchases the couple needs to make first to prepare for the baby, and he has begged his wife to understand where he’s coming from. However, she has not spoken to her husband since.

What do you think? Is the author justified in refusing to let his wife purchase more maternity clothes, considering their finances are very tight and she already has several sets of them? Or does he need to appreciate that because she's on bed rest, she doesn't have all that much to do and she's bored, and having some new maternity clothes might brighten her mood?
