The mother of the ex claims that this was unjust, and is an instance of racial discrimination.
A parent has turned to Reddit after a dispute with her son's ex-girlfriend, an 18-year-old woman who allegedly keyed his car.
The mother, who remains anonymous, wants justice for the destruction of her child’s vehicle. She wonders if she’s taking things too far.
Teenage heartbreak can be a rollercoaster of intense emotions.
The mother goes on to explain that her 17-year-old son, who has his own car, recently broke up with his girlfriend.
"My son dumped his ex-girlfriend because he began to have feelings for another girl. He spoke to me and I made sure to tell him to dump her lightly and not her feelings before trying things out with the other girl."
When the teenager explained to his girlfriend that he was breaking up with her because he cared about someone else, she did not take the news well. The author of the post alleges that the ex-girlfriend then "keyed his car and caused serious damage" in retaliation for the breakup.
"She ended up keying my son's car. I'm talking to the point where it is completely messed up. She carved my son's new girlfriend's name on to the doors and called her [a derogatory term]. She also [drew a vulgar drawing] and labeled it my son's name."
The mother also alleges that the ex-girlfriend "broke one of the windows and poured a soft drink into it".
There are consequences to breaking the law.
The mother explains how she happened to arrive at the scene as the ex-girlfriend was pouring the soft drink into the car, and she immediately called the police. The ex was arrested on the spot and had to pay bail.
That said, the mother wants further punishment taken.
"I'm feeling like pressing charges because it's my son's first car and we don't want to spend much money on a new car."
On the other side of the equation, the ex-girlfriend's mother is furious with the author of the Reddit post for involving the police. She went to the mother's home and screamed at her, calling the son's mother "a monster for calling the cops on a black girl". The ex's mom then justified that the "son cheated and deserved to have his car ruined".
The author of the post concluded her story with:
"I don't feel in the slightest bit bad for pressing charges and ruining this girl's life, because she's acting like a complete psycho."
Internet readers were quick to weigh in and support the author in her decision. They explained that the ex-girlfriend committed a crime, and she has to take responsibility for that. And while being cheated on or dumped is painful, it's not an excuse to damage people's property.
What do you think? Was this mother in the right for pressing charges against the ex-girlfriend? Or should she have had more empathy for the young woman's pain and let it slide?
