This beloved neighborhood mascot has terminal cancer, and she wants a chance to say her final goodbyes.
Most neighborhoods have special fixtures that give them real character and charm. For a quaint little spot in Sommerville, Boston, the most precious addition to their streets is a loveable puppy named Sparkle.
Sparkle is an 11-year-old pup who has been delighting her neighbors for over 10 years. She's enjoyed sitting outside to interact with people as they walk by, and receiving plenty of pets from her adoring fans.
Unfortunately, no one lives forever, and Sparkle is no exception. This precious puppy has terminal cancer, and she doesn't have much time left.
A neighborhood grieves as they say their final goodbyes.
A passer-by named Eric Magnussen snapped a shot of this adorable pooch on November 9th and shared it with the internet.
Sparkle's owner Melora Rush knows just how much her pup's happy face and wagging tail have brought joy to those around her, and for that reason, Melora wanted to give her neighbors an equal chance to say goodbye. Posted outside, right next to Sparkle's favorite place to sit and watch the world and people go by, a sign was posted. It read:
"Sparkle has cancer in her upper jaw, which sadly cannot be cured. She is being treated as needed with antibiotics (for secondary infection) and pain medications. Sparkle is 11 years old and has given joy and comfort to many in the neighborhood. We hope she will continue to be with us for several more months, but we cannot know. Depending on her daily condition, she may be spending more time inside these days."
"If you see her outside please continue to love her (gently), but avoid touching the side of her face, because it may be swollen and sensitive, and there may be some bleeding."
A local celebrity leaves behind a pup-tastic legacy.
The snapshot of Sparkle, and her charming notes, received over 225,000 likes on social media, and continues to be shared. Passer-bys have also shared plenty of their own selfies with the now-famous dog, expressing their gratitude for the bright light she would bring into the world.
With the popularity of Sparkle online, and the memories she leaves behind, her owner Melora Rush created a Twitter page for her beloved pup, SparkleMayorofSomervile. The description of the page reads:
"Sparkle has been bringing joy to our neighborhood for over 10 years now. Thanks for loving our girl!!"
Though this precious dog is ill, and soon will no longer be with us. But she leaves behind a wonderful legacy of giving smiles and joy to people, especially when they needed it most. The last few years have been tough for everyone in the world, and Sparkle's life brightened the world, leaving it all the better for it.
