A surprising career path
The latest data on the highest paid Boston city employees is now out and police officers and firefighters topped the list.
Police officers and firefighters benefit from a lucrative pay structure that pays them for details and overtime. This additional pay can easily exceed their base salary, thus doubling their total compensation.
This overtime pay has often been a contentious issue within Boston and some police officers have been charged with overtime fraud. The city is trying to cut overtime pay this year, something that it has been attempting to do over an extended period of time. But the path to limiting police officer and firefighter pay is not clear since the optics of coming out against paying police and firefighters is so poor.
