New York City Ranks #32 on List of '‘Best Places To Retire’

Though NYC didn't top the list, it was included in the 150 best places to retire in America

New York City — Saying New York City is merely "crowded" is like saying Shaquille O'Neal is sorta "tall." After all, roughly 1 in every 38 people living in the United States is a New Yorker. Or to put it another way: a city whose land area is two times smaller than Houston nevertheless accounts for 1 in every 38 Americans.

No wonder the Big Apple scored low in affordability (3.6 out of 10). After all, more residents mean more competition for goods and services. Ah, but somewhat surprisingly — NYC scored a perfect 10 in health care.

Whenever someone has retirement on the mind, "excellent health care" sounds musical to the ears. But top health care isn't alone what makes Gotham City so appealing for retirees.

As the U.S. News & World Report's new ranking notes: "For centuries, New York City has been a leader in trade and culture, redefining everything from fashion trends to what a proper bagel with schmear should taste like.”

Indeed, the City That Never Sleeps still oozes a mystique . . . a mystique that inspired Ol' Blue Eyes to famously belt out: "I want to be a part of it. New York, New York!"

Roughly a century later, vagabond shoes are still intent on spreading the news:

Sure, crowded buildings along with cramped subways and overpriced living conditions count as "minuses" for most. But as the legendary author John Steinbeck once remarked:

Its climate is a scandal, its politics are used to frighten children, its traffic is madness, its competition is murderous. But there is one thing about it: once you have lived in New York and it has become your home, no place else is good enough.
