The news headlines and footage pouring in from the Ukraine are incredibly tragic. “Pregnant woman & her baby injured in Mariupol maternity hospital bombing have died, AP reports,” “Strike hits facility for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities near Kyiv, says regional council,” and many such headlines, like these from CNN, stream to American homes, spaced by minutes, not hours. Many of us around the globe watch, horrified, asking, What can I do?

She was so small, and nobody was sure she would survive, but Ruth’s grandma made up a little bassinet and placed her on the oven door to keep her warm. Who could have imagined then that little Ruth would not only survive, but live to see her 100th year?

One such organization, Kiwanis, has been meeting the needs of others for over 100 years. Founded in Detroit, Michigan in 1915, Kiwanis now boasts more than 550,000 members in 80 countries and geographic areas worldwide and hosts nearly 150,000 service projects each year. One of its local chapters, the Honeoye Falls-Lima/Mendon Kiwanis Club, recently took part in a statewide initiative to help Kentucky families impacted by devastating tornados.

Lacrosse player Fiona Clancy will head to Newberry College in South Carolina to play for their Division II Wolves, and Madison Buck is trading her status as a Churchville-Chili Saint for a place on Buffalo’s D’Youville College Saints Division II women’s lacrosse team.
