(ATLANTA, Ga.) A new venture that caters to both wine and book lovers is making its way to Atlanta this summer.

The new wine cafe and bookstore, Lucian Books and Wine, will be making a home at Modera Buckhead in early June. The new establishment is owned by Atlanta sommelier Jordan Smelt and Katie Barringer.

Smelt was the wine and beverage director for Cakes and Ale in Decatur and Barringer is the former owner of Cover Books. Cakes and Ale’s owner, chef Billy Allin closed the establishment after a decade. Cover Books opened in 2016 and closed two years later, but during its time, the space hosted food and wine events as well as book release parties.

Together, the pair is bringing their expertise and a unique experience to the city. The establishment is named after the British painter Lucian Freud, who happens to be Barringer’s favorite artist.

Patrons of the cafe can explore books that cater to art, design, food and culture.

Looking for a vast selection of wine while you get lost in the pages of a good read? Lucian will carry almost 250 wines by the bottle and 15 wines by the glass.

Throughout the day, customers can enjoy wine-friendly food options and larger dishes served during dinner hours. The kitchen will be led by chef Brian Hendrickson who’s worked with Smelt at the Cakes and Ale establishment. Many of the wines will be European-leaning with food easily paired to each selection.

The cafe will also offer a takeout option on Fridays and Saturdays, “At Home with Lucian,” the order will also come with a book from the shop.
