(ATLANTA, Ga.) Restaurateur Jesús Oñate Jr. is opening a Mexican restaurant and tequila bar in downtown Chamblee.
The new establishment, Antiguo Lobo will offer traditional and multi-regional Mexican food during lunch and dinner hours Tuesday through Sunday.
The name translates to “old wolf” in Spanish and is paying homage to Oñate Jr.’s father, Jesús Oñate Sr., who opened his first restaurant in the city of Chamblee. Oñate Sr. owned El Sombrero, the Lazy Donkey and eight El Ranchero restaurants throughout the metro Atlanta area before passing away in 2018.
Jesús Jr. took over management of one of his father’s restaurants in Smyrna at the age of 20. In a press release he said, “I’m honored to carry on my father’s legacy with this new restaurant, which is a homecoming of sorts as my father opened his first restaurant in the U.S. in Chamblee.”
He also stated that the menu will “blend Mexican cuisine inspired by the food Jesus Jr. grew up eating with dishes he discovered throughout years visiting and eating in the country.”
Many of the ingredients will be sourced locally and customers will be able to enjoy the signature dish, Molcajete El Monstruo, which comes with a choice of steak, grilled chicken or shrimp, and is served with green onion, grilled queso fresco, tomato, nopal cactus, tomatillo cream salsa, rice and beans.
The menu will also feature classic dishes like enchiladas, salads, soups, nachos, burritos and street tacos.
The tequila bar will offer agave-based spirit and cocktails using infused tequila and mezcal. Customers can enjoy house-made margaritas prepared with fresh juices and agave nectars.
The restaurant’s interior will mirror traditional Mexican restaurants as well as pay homage to Jesús Sr. with a mural and other images from his life.
The 1,265 square-foot dining room and bar will seat approximately 60 people at full capacity, along with a large patio at the front of the building.
There is no set opening date but doors will be open this spring and customers can visit at 5370 Peachtree Road.https://www.antiguolobo/
