History of the Florida Strawberry Festival—How did it All Start?

Situated between Lakeland and Tampa, Plant City is known as the Winter Strawberry Capital of the World. Stretching back more than 90 years, the Lions Club in the Plant City came up with the idea to plan a festival in honor of strawberries in 1929 (the champion of the city's agricultural products).

The festival started in 1930 and was known as the Plant City Strawberry Festival. An annual festival queen contest was created, adding more excitement. The Plant City Strawberry Festival took place every year until World War II, suspended at that time. However, the event was revived again in 1947 by the Norman McLeod American Legion. At this time, the Junior Chamber of Commerce (Jaycees) of the Plant City were in charge. In the late 1950s, the Junior Chamber of Commerce of the Plant City turned the contest over to the Lions Club.

Every spring, the event welcomes locals and tourists to enjoy and experience all the Plant city offers. Visitors can relish exhibits of agriculture, livestock, horticulture, crafts, and commerce industry. The festival created on the historic American concept of fairs bringing people and communities together through food, culture as celebrations of their harvests. Moreover, it is also a great way to preserve heritage while enhancing the Florida strawberry's agricultural and historical legacy.

Throughout the 11 days of the event, visitors experience fun and enjoyment in different ways and forms. From social events and youth development programs to contests, parades, marching bands, delectable food, on-stage entertainment, and plenty of ways to eat strawberries, it's an event you will fall in love with and an experience you will cherish forever.
