As part of an effort by Staff Meal Dallas and a huge sponsorship from Dallas-based online dating company Match, thousands will be offered complimentary meals on Tuesday, February 23, "no questions asked."
After the recent plunging temperatures have left thousands without power, water or reliable food sources thanks to home damage from broken pipes and lack of potable water all over the city, the need is certainly abundant in North Texas. Many locally owned and/or operated restaurants that have endured tremendous financial hardship over the last year due to the Coronavirus Pandemic have taken yet another hit, having had to close first for the normally lucrative Valentine's Day service as well as the week afterward due to either dangerous conditions, damage or both.
This solution kills two birds with one stone, as it were. Staff Meal Dallas, part of Fest Events Foundation, a 501c3 nonprofit, is able to collect funds and distribute them to local restaurants as "tabs" where a pre-determined meal is given away for free to customers in need. All they have to do is ask for the "staff meal." Since Thursday, starting with just one restaurant, Intrinsic Smokehouse Brewery + BBQ in Garland, and a $250 tab provided by a certain local food writer, the effort has raised over $55,000 (thanks in large part to the sizable gift from Match plus a ton of influencer marketing), helping bolster more than 70 restaurants and feeding over 5,000.
