The Houston Texans have recently announced that they will be parting ways with star wide receiver Will Fuller. This does not come as a surprise, as the Texans were trying to shop Fuller during last year’s trade deadline . This indicated that their plan all along was not to extend him, which is why they at least tried to get something back in return before hitting NFL Free Agency .
Despite coming fresh off a six-game suspension for PED’s, there should still be a competitive market for the former Notre Dame product. The New York Jets come to mind, when digging into the list of teams that will show interest, as Fuller will be seeking a potential long-term deal. Gang Green needs to invest in the position, whether it is in free agency, the draft or both.
With the team most likely letting Breshad Perriman walk and possibly cutting Jamison Crowder to free up $10 million in cap space, they desperately need to make a big-time move. Fuller may not be the most popular option, but he could be the most realistic to become a vital part of their West Coast style offense.Jets Free Agency Target: Will Fuller
The Jets already seem to have an extreme interest before he even officially became a free agent. According to Bleacher Report , Will Fuller and JuJu Smith-Schuster are at the top of Joe Douglas’ list going into the free agency period. ESPN reporter Jeremy Flower also reported that he believes he could very likely land in New York.
Before the suspension, he was having himself a career-year in 2020. Fuller secured 53 receptions, 879 yards and a career-high eight touchdowns, as he averaged an impressive 16.6 yards a catch.
He is a big-time playmaker with a mixture of speed and athleticism. Fuller got the nickname Flash for a reason, and speed and play-making abilities are exactly what the Jets lack. However, it is fair to be a little hesitant with adding him. In five years in Houston, he failed to play a full 16 games and has never posted a 1,000-yard season. This is not because he lacks talent, but more so he has struggled mightily to stay healthy. Beggars can not be choosers at this point, and the Jets should consider pursuing him, if the price is right. Especially if he has the interest in coming to New York, because that is always a plus.
The Jets will have their hands full during free agency, and the wide receiver position will be a top priority of theirs. Whether it is Fuller or one of the many that are projected to become a free agent, expect New York to upgrade significantly at the position.
