If you are a fan of New Haven-Style ''Apizza'' then you are going to love this recipe! We all know Connecticut is known for its pizza and this recipe for Focaccia is an easy version of a homestyle New Haven Pizza. This is one of my favorite recipes from Chef Giada De Laurentiis and it's called Focaccia di Recco! It truly reminds me of my family in Italy. This recipe is probably very different from what you know as traditional Italian Focaccia bread. ''In Ancient Rome, panis focacius was a flat bread baked on the hearth. The word is derived from the Latin focus 'hearth, a place for baking'. The first attestation of the word focaccia dates back to the 14th century. Focaccia is sometimes considered to be a variant of pizza in publications outside Italy, although focaccia is left to rise after being flattened, while pizza is baked immediately,'' according to Wikipedia.

If you grew up in Connecticut, then you know that the ''Nutmeg State's'' favorite pie is Pumpkin Pie. According to the Connecticut state library, ''it got the name because, in the state’s early days, Southern customers would buy nutmegs without knowing they had to grate them and would say the Connecticut Yankees sold them wooden nutmegs. Another theory is that “early inhabitants had the reputation of being so ingenious and shrewd that they were able to make and sell wooden nutmegs,” which is a lot less flattering. Regardless, the nutmeg connection makes Connecticut a natural fit for pumpkin pie. According to some, it should get even more specific with maple (another classic New England ingredient), pumpkin, nutmeg, and pecan streusel. Pumpkin is Connecticut’s official state pie, and we take that love of pumpkin to a new level with the maple pumpkin with pecan streusel,” says Stephen Jarrett, manager of Michele’s Pies. It’s made with New England maple syrup, Connecticut pumpkins, nutmeg, and pecan streusel, “which captures the flavors and feelings of autumn that Connecticuters know best,” according to The Matador Network website.

The history of the company reflects their hard work and dedication to their pies and their customers. ''In 1985, Oronoque Orchards was destroyed by a fire. Although no longer available for sale, the pies were not forgotten by the many customers who had enjoyed them and the many fond childhood memories of visiting the original bakery in Stratford. In 1993, the Winton's daughter, Susan and her family reopened in the White Hills of Shelton under the name of Oronoque Farms. In 2004, new owners have moved in to carry on the Winton family traditions of their homemade pies and baked goods. Charlene and Jenette plan to continue, along with the help of Ronnie, the baker, and their families to make the same great pies that everyone remembers from their childhood. Shelton Oronoque Farms is open daily from 10am to 6pm, closed Mondays with extended hours on holidays.''

I add round orange slices to mine while it's cooking in the crockpot for an even more seasonal-scented experience. Apple Sauce dates back to at least the Middle Ages. Apple butters were brought to the Americas by German immigrants such as the Moravians and Pennsylvania Dutch.
