I love a great smelling house, but my allergies just can't handle most store-bought air fresheners. They usually bring on an instant headache.
An alternative to chemical-filled sprays and candles is this DIY air freshener that you can make with four simple ingredients. Best of all, it's completely natural and smells just incredible.
What you need:
- 2 lemon slices
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 sprig of fresh rosemary
- 4 cups of water
- 1 cinnamon stick (optional)
Now, just plop everything into a small saucepan and let it simmer on your stove. It doesn't need to a full boil. Just enough heat to create some steam that will waft through the house with its glorious aroma.
I prefer to make this without the cinnamon. I love the taste of it, but the scent makes me sneeze. However, if cinnamon is a smell you enjoy, try adding some the pot.
This recipe is so versatile and easy to play around with. If you don't like rosemary, try swapping it out for basil. Or toss in a handful of cranberries and cloves for a more festive holiday air freshener.
After your house smells great, you can let the mixture cool and store it in the fridge to use again.
I find that it keeps it's scent for at least a few hours of simmer time.
