Whenever a Power 5 football coach gets fired, speculation starts. Every media site has a list of who they should hire.

This should be different. Arizona State doesn't need a list; it needs Deion Sanders.

Here's why.

Herm Edwards Tenure

When Arizona State hired Herm Edwards, hopes were high. An NFL coach with Arizona State's resources should have been a match made in heaven.

Unfortunately, it didn't turn out that way. Edwards went 46–26 and never won more than 8 games in the same season. He was fired after a disappointing 30–21 loss to Eastern Michigan.

It's worth noting that he never finished a season with a losing record. But, the expectations at Arizona State are high, and Coach Edwards simply didn't get the job done.

Deion Sanders as a College Coach

What Deion Sanders has done at Jackson State is nothing short of amazing.

During the shortened Covid season, he went 4–3. In his first real season, that improved to 11–2. This season is shaping to be even better after a strong 3–0 start.

However, his on-field accomplishments aren't the reason he should be hired.

Why Arizona State Should Hire Deion

Recruiting is why Arizona State should do everything in its power to hire Deion Sanders.

Recruiting has always been hugely important in college football. It's simple, the teams with the best players win the most games.

Recruiting the best players out of high school and junior college is essential. But, with how the transfer portal works now, you also have to compete for the best transfers. Also, you need to recruit your own players to keep them from transferring out.

Deion Sanders is a man of many talents, but recruiting might be his biggest talent of all.

I won't bore you with all the details, but his recruiting classes at Jackson State have been impressive. They had by far the best recruiting class at the FCS level. That includes success with both "traditional" recruits and players from the transfer portal.

If he can recruit with Jackson State's resources, imagine what he could do with Arizona State's money.
