Philippe The Original: bringing 100+ years of culinary excellence to Los Angeles

Eugene Adams

The Los Angeles restaurant scene is crowded.

Every year, hundreds of “new kids on the block” come and go.

Doing something new isn’t always impressive. What’s impressive is a restaurant that stands the test of time.

Philippe The Original is the definition of a place that stands the test of time. It’s been around since 1908 and is the home of the original french dip sandwich.

A place with that kind of history isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.

Philippe The Original

The story behind the invention of the french dip is legendary. In 1918, a policeman ordered a sandwich. The sandwich was accidentally dropped into a roasting pan that contained hot juices from the oven.

Rather than throwing the mistake out, the policeman still decided to take the sandwich. He loved it soo much that he returned the next day asking for another. Just like that, the french dip sandwich was born.

Philippe The Original first opened in 1908. Some things have changed, but the essential parts have remained the same.

Philippe The Original is and always will be a family-owned and operated business. They also refuse to use anything other than the best ingredients.

Their legendary “French Dipped Sandwich” is a perfect example of their commitment to excellence. It’s made with your choice of meat, served on a freshly baked French roll dipped in the natural gravy of the roasts. You can then choose from Swiss, Cheddar, American, Monterey Jack, or Blue Cheese.

The menu includes six french dipped options.

  • Beef
  • Pastrami
  • Turkey
  • Lamb
  • Pork
  • Ham

If you can’t decide or have a large family, go for the family pack.

Everyone should try one of their french dipped sandwiches at least once, but there are other options on the menu as well.

Their delicious breakfast menu is served from 6:00 am to 10:30 am daily.

They also serve surprisingly good salads, soups, and chili.

Of course, they also have an extensive beer and wine menu to wash all down with.
