Did you know that the Santa Monica Pier was initially designed as a way to dump sewage into the ocean?

Despite its unfortunate beginning, the pier has stood the test of time. Today it’s a popular fishing spot and tourist destination.

Part of the popularity is the view combined with excellent weather. Another part is that there are so many fun things to do.

The diversity of attractions makes it a perfect family destination. There is something fun for everyone.

Here are five fun things you can do next time you visit the Santa Monica Pier.

Walk Around and Enjoy The View

When was the last time you just sat back and enjoyed the view?

The beautiful view from the pier is tough to beat. If you like fishing, you can enjoy the view as you catch some fish. If not, take a nice walk around the pier or the beach.

Ride The Rides

One thing that stands out whenever you see pictures of the pier is the rides. The rides are not there as decorations; they are fully functioning.

Pacific Park features 12 rides, including the wildly popular West Coaster and Pacific Wheel.

You can pay for the rides individually, but that will get expensive fast. The unlimited passes are a much better value.

Unlimited Ride Wristbands

  • Ages 7 and under — $20
  • Ages 7 and up — $40

If rides aren’t your thing, Pacific Park also features all the classic boardwalk-style games you would expect

If you’re going to spend the day at the pier, you will eventually need to eat something. Thankfully, there are plenty of food options on the pier and off

Of course, you are also welcome to pack your lunch. If you have a large family, that’s probably the cheapest option.

Visit The Beach

Don’t forget that you can’t have a pier without a beach, and Santa Monica has a beautiful beach.

The Santa Monica Pier offers direct access to the beach itself. That makes it easy to go back and forth between the beach and the pier.

Some people aren’t interested in the beach or get tired of it quickly. Santa Monica’s robust shopping options might be more your speed.

There are more than enough shops in the city of Santa Monica to keep you busy while the kids enjoy the beach.
