Throughout my work as a personal trainer, I’ve seen both good and bad reasons to lose weight.

A misguided desire to live up to unrealistic beauty standards is the most common wrong reason.

But, there are some excellent reasons to lose weight. Spiderman actor Jacob Batalon found a couple of excellent reasons.

Two good reasons to lose weight

A couple of quotes stuck out to me.

“I felt like I could barely walk up stairs without being out of breath and this one day I kind of just saw myself without a shirt on and it was just ridiculous. I could not believe I let myself get this far. That’s what sort of started it all.” -Jacob Batalon

Twenty-five is much too young to be out of breath doing something as simple as walking up some stairs.

“Even when I wasn’t doing anything physical, I found myself getting sleepy at work and it was because of all the fat food I was eating.” -Jacob Batalon

A lack of energy is one of the commonly overlooked negatives of being out of shape.

What did all this motivation lead to?

Jacob Batalon ultimately lost a whopping 112 pounds

How he did it

To lose weight, Batalon hit the gym six days a week. A typical workout lasted about 1.5 hours, with 60 minutes of lifting weights and 30 minutes of cardio.

He also made changed his diet to be more plant-based.

“Recently, my girlfriend has actually gotten me into a plant-based diet, as well, and that’s really helped my body and I can feel the difference between eating a lot of meat and eating plant-based stuff and that’s really helped me, as well.”-Jacob Batalon.

Final Thoughts

One hundred pounds is a lot more weight than most people have to lose. However, according to the CDC, even modest weight loss has benefits.

Losing just 5–10% of your body weight will likely produce health benefits, such as improved blood pressure, blood cholesterol, and blood sugars

The health benefits of losing weight are just part of the equation. There is also the fact that exercise has been shown to boost energy levels

Note: Be sure to consult your doctor before starting a new workout or diet plan.
