Will the falling vaccination rates doom President Biden's July 4th goal?

President Biden set the ambitious goal of vaccinating 70% of adults by July 4th.

That goal is now in serious danger due to plummeting vaccination rates.

Vaccination Rates Dropping

America is currently averaging fewer than 1 million shots per day

That might sound like a lot, but it’s down significantly from April, despite more people being eligible. In April, America was delivering 3.4 million shots per day.

This drop was reflected in a recent CDC report. The CDC reported that as of June 3rd, 63% of adults had received their first dose. That’s up only 1 percent from the week before.

According to the Washington Post, twelve states have seen their vaccinations drop to 15 shots daily per 10,000 residents. Alabama is the last in the nation, with only 4 people per 10,000 getting vaccinated last week.

The Reason

One big reason for the slowdown is that the people who desperately wanted it have already got it.

Dr. Fauci touched on the is very subject recently

“The low-hanging fruit — those people who absolutely want to get vaccinated without you telling them anything have already been vaccinated, which has led to the slowdown.”-Anthony Fauci

The White House understands this problem. President Biden has been trying to encourage more Americans to get vaccinated

Big Milestone

Despite the slowdown, the U.S. did pass a vaccine milestone recently. The U.S. recently administered its 300 millionth vaccine dose

My Thoughts

Biden’s July 4th goal was overly ambitious, in my opinion. I don’t think we will quite get there.

Polls have shown that as much as 1/3rd of Americans have no immediate plans to get vaccinated. That level of hesitancy makes it nearly impossible to vaccinate 70% of adults on the President’s timeline.

We must also consider the fact that Covid rates keep dropping. The better things get, the less urgency people will feel to get vaccinated.

Government incentives do make the goal possible, just not probable.
