When will Los Angeles workers be allowed to take off their masks?

First, California set June 15th as their full reopening date. Then, the CDC released new mask guidelines for fully vaccinated individuals

Those changes have led Los Angeles residents to impatiently wait for the day we can finally put masks behind us.

For vaccinated people, that day seems to have come as far as their private lives are concerned. However, their professional lives are a different story.

Los Angeles County follows state guidelines when it comes to workplace masking.

Workplace mask guidelines have been much slower to change.

However, we are finally getting a clearer picture of what those rules will be.

What Happened?

The California Occupational Safety and Health Standards (CalOSHA) Board is responsible for determining workplace regulations.

They voted to allow workers to go maskless only if every employee in a room is fully vaccinated. For example, office workers surrounded by nothing but vaccinated colleagues will be allowed to remove their masks.

Retail and restaurant workers will still have to mask. Any job that has interaction with members of the public will still be required to mask.

Previous Rules

Currently, employees that work indoors or outdoors with 10,000 or more people have additional requirements. They must socially distance or be offered N95 masks.

Those regulations will remain in place for the time being. However, they are set to end on July 31st

More Changes to Come

CalOSHA made it clear that these new regulations are meant to be temporary. They intend to update them as time passes.

My Thoughts

Covid related work restrictions are going to be frustratingly slow to change in Los Angeles.

The rules are probably a little overcautious. However, it’s better to be overcaution than careless.

Like most pandemic-related things, we will just have to wait and see how things evolve.

Note: If you want to take a look at the new rules for yourself, here they are.
