Los Angeles County reaches its most significant reopening milestone yet

When California announced its tier reopening system, getting to the yellow (lowest) tier seemed nearly impossible.

However, Los Angeles County has managed just that.

L.A. joins San Francisco and Trinity County as the only counties in the yellow tier.

How Did Los Angeles Qualify for the Yellow Tier?

Covid numbers in Los Angeles and California as a whole have been improving rapidly.

On Sunday and Monday, L.A. reported zero Covid related deaths. On Tuesday, there were only two Covid deaths reported in the entire state.

This rapid improvement comes at a time when neighboring states (Oregon and Washington) are shutting down again due to a surge.

Los Angeles’s rate of new cases has fallen to 1.6 per 100,000 residents. That is well below the 2 per 100,000 needed to enter the Yellow tier.

Mayor Garcetti gives all the credit to the sacrifices made by ordinary citizens.

“It’s a tribute to everything Angelenos have done to stay safe, stop the spread, and defeat COVID-19. Our sacrifices have gotten us to a promising point in the life of this pandemic, but we know for a fact that continued momentum for our businesses, workforce, families and communities depends on us remaining vigilant, following public health guidelines, rolling up our sleeves and getting vaccinated as soon as possible.” -Mayor Garcetti

What Changes in the Yellow Tier?

Here are some of the changes that the yellow tier will bring

  • Bars and saunas can reopen
  • Movie theaters can increase their capacity to 75% if all customers are fully vaccinated (50% capacity otherwise)
  • Gyms and entertainment centers can increase capacity to 50%
  • Outdoor sporting venues (like Dodger Stadium) can increase capacity to 67%

Faster Than the Rest of California

Los Angeles is well ahead of the rest of the state, with a little over a month until our full reopening.

Just last month, Governor Newsom set June 15th as the economy's reopening date

“We’ll be opening up on June 15, this economy…business as usual. We are announcing now that on June 15 we will be getting rid of the colored [reopening] tiers.” -Gavin Newsom

Final Thoughts

If the rate of vaccination keeps up, things will only continue to improve in Los Angeles. That is great news for all the pandemic weary people out there.

This summer promises to be much better than last if we can keep it up.
