(PORTLAND, Ore.) Hello Portlanders! It's Friday, Aug. 25 - Here's your daily round up of all the news happening in the City of Roses.
1. Portland's main water source tests positive for potentially disease-causing microorganism
Water collected from the Bull Run Watershed, Portland’s main drinking water source, tested positive for cryptosporidium on Sunday, according to officials. Cryptosporidium, a parasite that causes cryptosporidiosis, is a serious disease with symptoms including diarrhea, vomiting, fever and stomach pain.
People with healthy immune systems can recover from exposure without medical help, but immunocompromised individuals may experience more severe symptoms. In rare cases, cryptosporidium can lead to serious or life-threatening illness.
The water last tested positive for the parasite in May. The Portland Water Bureau currently does not treat for cryptosporidium, although it’s required to do so under drinking water regulations. The bureau said “Portland is working to install filtration by September 2027 under a compliance schedule with Oregon Health Authority.” Public health officials have implemented watershed protections and monitoring until then.
2. Hot, hazy conditions continue in Portland after thunderstorms Friday morning
Friday morning began with several thunderstorms across the Portland area, but hot and hazy conditions are expected to return by the afternoon. Temperatures will move into the low to mid-90s on Friday and continue into the weekend.
Thanks to brief rain showers Friday morning, some improvements will be seen to air quality. A layer of haze from the Canadian wildfire smoke will likely remain over the region through Sunday.
3. Yelp ranks Portland's best smash burgers
It’s Portland Burger Week and Yelp has compiled a list of restaurants in and around the Rose City that serve the best smash burgers. Smash burgers feature a thinner, often more flavorful, patty.
Restaurants listed include Love Eatz Smash Burgers (Tigard), Monster Smash Burgers (Portland), Sure Shot Burger (Portland), Sammy’s Smash Burgers (Fairview), MidCity SmashedBurger (Portland) and more.
