At 8:28 pm on Thursday, April 22, a structure fire was reported near 34th street and Martin Luther King Jr. Way near A Taste of Denmark bakery.
Police passing by on the freeway noticed a bathroom at the park was in flames near the freeway.
Local citizens filmed the fire, which blazed under the overpass and was taller than the fire truck that arrived.
Minutes later, firefighters arrived on scene. There, they discovered a single-story commercial building fire. Police requested that westbound traffic be blocked off.
Around 8:40 pm, the bathroom fire was reportedly under control. No injuries were reported at the scene.
Earlier this week, an arsonist who is linked to six different fires started in Oakland in nine hours is being sought.
The person of interest is described as White, in his late 20s to late 30s, with light-colored, ear-length hair and stubble-like facial hair. He was last seen with a medium-size dark-colored dog and a bicycle that he may have been using to get to the different sites, authorities said.
Authorities are requesting residents and businesses in the areas of the fires to review their security cameras during the time frames of the fires and contact police property crimes Sgt. Dole and 510-337-8379 with any information that may assist in the investigation.
Practice good fire safety even in outdoor bathrooms. If no fire extinguishers are present, stay away from fires and call the fire department. You and your community’s safety is on the line.
