Countdown is on for TEDx Vero Beach at the Emerson Center

Vero Beach had their first TEDx event on October 19th, 2019, at the Emerson Center, a few months before the pandemic started. It was a grand affair and sellout. Unfortunately, the coronavirus put a damper on things and Michael Strezinski, the founder of TEDxVero, along with his board were unable to schedule it again until now.

The next TEDx event is set for February 27th from 2-6pm at the Emerson Center. For those who do not know about TEDx events, here is the story in a nutshell. It started back in 1984 in New York City and annual conferences began in 1990. TED stands for technology, entertainment, and design. The founder, Harry Marks, noticed a confluence between these three industries and sought to organize a conference using the slogan “ideas worth spreading” to describe the talks.

It was not until 1990 that annual conferences began and started gaining traction. TED Talk conferences brought in influential speakers from industries outside of the original three and conferences were organized all around the globe. Because the speakers were leaders in their respective industries, it attracted millions of viewers thanks to YouTube and social media. Attending a conference in person is difficult because the tickets cost $8,500 a seat and you must apply for a ticket and seats are limited.

Fast-forward to 2009 and TEDx was started to create TED Talks at the community level. The “x” in TEDx means independently organized. The speakers at TEDx events are local leaders and influencers in the community that also have ideas worth sharing. These events bring people together at the local level where the speakers share their experiences for the benefit of everyone. It is a platform to connect people and foster deep discussions.

While attendees usually do not have to apply for a ticket to TEDx, seats are limited to 100, the cost is $100 a ticket and the event is one-day only whereas TED Talk conferences span 5 days.

Michael Strezinski applied for a TEDx license and has diligently put together a dynamic board to help him produce stellar events. The first one was a total success and the second one on February 27th is on par with the first one to equally as entertaining. This year’s roundup of local speakers includes Patrice Bowes, Jason P. Conklin, Richard Gallegos, Lisa Giessert, Barbara Hammond, Miriam Ismail, Eve Kyomya, Annie Meehan, Kristina Pernfors, and Jeff Pickering. All of them are well known pillars of the community and influential leaders in their own right.
