Bikram yoga is also known as hot yoga. For those who have never tried it before, do not be intimidated. Yes, the room is heated between 98 and 102°F with 40% humidity, but we live in Florida, so shouldn’t we be used to the heat?

All kidding aside, hot yoga has plenty of amazing benefits. Traditional yoga is ideal for reducing stress and improving strength and flexibility. It is also wonderful for improving balance too, which is great for people aged forty and beyond. When heat is added, hot yoga can offer a more intense workout for your heart and lungs. Sweating releases toxins from our bodies. Studies done on Bikram yoga have also shown it to improve bone density in women and manage glucose levels (Bone density study and glucose study).

Hot yoga is increasing in popularity for those looking for a total body workout that is also low impact. For runners, cyclists, tennis/pickleball players and surfers, hot yoga is the perfect complement to their regime to keep their muscles lithe and limber.

Pat Murray is the owner of Indian River Bikram Yoga. She is a long-time yoga enthusiast who is certified in teaching Bikram yoga. There are twenty-six postures, and the classes are 90-minutes long. She offers a beginner’s special for anyone who has never been to her studio before – 5 classes for $35. For those not wanting to be in the heat and are new to yoga, Pat also offers chair yoga classes too.

Her website has all the details of what to expect, wear and bring to a class - You can also check out all the postures and their benefits. Remember, beginners may not do each pose as shown. It takes time but Pat is there to guide you every step of the way and will demonstrate any accommodations for beginners.

We are at the start of a new year and summer will be here before you know it, so now is the perfect time to give hot yoga a try. Check out the website and reserve a spot for your first class – or call 772-925-9697 today.
