MANATEE COUNTY, FLORIDA: According to the Florida Highway Patrol, one person died and three others were injured in a wrong-way drunk driving incident in Manatee County early on New Year's Day.
According to the collision report, it happened just after 3:30 a.m. on US Highway 41 at Buckeye Road.
According to troopers, a Jeep Wrangler with a driver and two passengers was traveling southbound on US-41 in foggy weather when an automobile began to approach them from the incorrect way.
The driver of the Jeep, a 58-year-old Sarasota man, then attempted to avoid a collision by turning to the left into a median. The right side of the wrong-way automobile, however, collided with the Jeep, according to the collision report.
The accident forced the Jeep to tumble "multiple times," ejecting a passenger in the backseat. Troopers recognized the passenger as an 80-year-old lady from Bradenton. According to authorities, she was not wearing a seatbelt.
According to FHP, the driver of the Jeep and another passenger, a 36-year-old Bradenton woman, had "minimal" injuries.
The driver of the automobile, which police claim was traveling in the wrong way at the time of the incident, was arrested and charged with DUI manslaughter, driving with a suspended or revoked license causing death, DUI property damage & injury, and reckless driving.
The Florida Highway Patrol Traffic Homicide Unit is still looking into the case, and response will be provided soon.
