San Francisco’s Treasure Island may be the Bay Area’s most underappreciated attractions. The island was created in 1936 for the 1936-37 Golden Gate International Exposition. After the fair closed, there were plans to resurrect it for a new “Fun in Forty” fair but those plans were scrapped, along with plans to turn it into an airport when the US entered into World War II and it was taken over by the Navy.
When the Navy Base closed in 1997, the island became San Francisco’s newest neighborhood. Among the favorites for tourists and locals alike are Gold Bar Whiskey and the Mersea restaurant as well as the Golden Hour Bar at Mersea.
Gold Bar Whiskey was founded on the island in 2013 right on Treasure Island. The company’s first bottles were produced in 2015. Gold Bar makes its own whiskey and collaborates with other distilleries. Gold Bar artfully blends and double casks, the product in used wine barrels, from the Napa Valley. The company owns three pot stills, totaling close to 1,000 gallons of distilling capacity.
If you can’t get to the Island, you can find Gold Bar in Bay Area stores including Safeway, Bevmo, Total Wine and many independent retailers.
Since 2019, Gold Bar Whiskey has partnered with the San Francisco 49ers and it unveiled the opening of the new Gold Bar Whiskey Bar on the main concourse of Levi's® Stadium. The ultra-premium Gold Bar Whiskey collection is available everywhere whiskey is served in Levi's Stadium including the new official Gold Bar Whiskey Bar inside Intel Gate A Plaza on the stadium's main concourse.
A good share of Gold Bar’s golden reputation is thanks to Master Blender Mounty Paulson. He graduated from the world-renowned University of California Davis School of Winemaking, with a Bachelor of Science in Fermentation Science. He has spent 25 year winemaking as well as managing some of Napa’s finest wineries.
Mersea
One of the best places to sample Gold Bar Whiskey and take in the Island view is at the fabulous Mersea restaurant. Executive chef and restaurateur Parke Ulrich and co-founding partner MeeSun Boice offer a unique and wonderful eatery with a view on the Great Lawn at Treasure Island. The container-style restaurant and bar the place to eat on Treasure Island
Mersea means “Island Oasis” in Old English. The fabulous food combined with the priceless view have already made it one of San Francisco’s best restaurants for locals and visitors.
Reservations are not required except in parties over 20. The restaurant is known for its out-of-this world chowder, salads, burgers and french fries.
Mersea is in partnership with the Golden Hour Bar. It is the palace to enjoy cocktails and the best view of the San Francisco skyline. It is less than a 10-minute ferry ride from the Ferry Building in downtown San Francisco.
Built in partnership with Gold Bar Whiskey, the Golden Hour Bar is the perfect place to meet eat and sample some of the best whisky sold and created in the Golden State.
Gold Bar Whiskey and Mersea are Treasure Island’s destination stops for any visitors to San Francisco.
