The American Idol show is facing criticism for what some say is the exploitation of Kellyanne Conway’s 16-year-old daughter, Claudia Conway. The program’s new season premiered Sunday evening on ABC stations around the country.

Claudia Conway sang the Rihanna song “Love on the Brain” as well as Adele’s “When You Were Young.” The daughter of a key advisor to former President Donald Trump, Kellyanne Conway, advanced to the next show on a 2-1 vote from the judges.

Before Claudia Conway appeared for her audition, a taped introductory video aired in which she said she "hated it" after she moved to Washington when she was 12. On the video, Claudia said: “When your mom’s working for the President of the United States, who you very much disagree with, it’s really hard.”

Judges Lionel Richie and Katy Perry voted in Claudia’s favor while Luke Bryan voted against her saying she was “limited” in her range.

Perry, who has been one of Trump’s most outspoken critics told Conway, “You have to calm the storm that is around you, meaning before you sing, you need to get off your phone. You need to stop reading your comments. Push it aside, because if not, you may not ever rise above your dad or your mom. It’s your choice.”

The controversy over the alleged "exploitation" of Claudia Conway was undoubtedly sparked by the rocky relationship she has had with her parents. In the most recent dustup, she accused her mother of posting nude photos of her on social media, Vox reports. She later took back that accusation.
