Located in an unassuming strip mall in Downey, CA. Crimson Coward is showing Downey locals what crispy and spicy hot chicken should be.
I love that they only use premium, all-natural, hormone and antibiotic-free chicken. They have 5 heat levels starting with no heat to BURRN, baby burn. I personally can only handle a mild to a medium. Anything more will numb my tongue and leave me useless.
The menu is simple. They have tenders, wings (flats plus tips), sandwiches and sides (mac and cheese, fried pickles, loaded fries). They do not sell pieces of chicken. The only meat on the bone is the wings.
The portions here are huge. The tenders are the size of at least 2 tenders from competitor restaurants. And the all-white meat chicken breast that they use for the sandwiches are so big they hang out of the front of the bun! It is a seriously good deal and can easily be portioned for two meals!
Let’s start with the tenders. The exterior is crispy and spicy, and the interior is moist and juicy. You can order with ranch, their own special sauce or honey. I personally like a medium spiced tender with a honey rancho combo dip. So good and is a true flavor bomb!
As I mentioned before, the sandwiches are huge. They have a couple of different varieties and are happy do add ons and substitutions. The homestyle sand which is my favorite as it is served on a toasted bread with coleslaw, pickles, and cheese. It feels like a grilled cheese on crack and I like it.
However, my favorite is the wings. I always get a full dozen with a side of their specialty mac and cheese fries. It’s the perfect balance of a crispy exterior with the tender interior that makes it a perfect bite. I can dunk these babies into ranch, or their house sauce all day.
Don’t forget to order a size or two as well. They have a thin fry resembling Mickey D’s. I ask for mine to be well done. The mac and cheese is super cheesy with an al dente macaroni pasta. It reminds me of mac and cheese with velveta growing up. They also have a potato salad and fried pickles. I have not tried either one of these, but I heard they were super delicious.
But my go to order is a specialty fry. The bottom is extra crispy fries, topped with the house sauce, then a layer of mac and cheese followed by coleslaw and more house sauce. Its delicious and you should try it. Just do not plan on doing anything after because it’s a sure way to not leave your couch for the rest of the day.
