Located in a little strip mall in Lake Forest, CA. Renzo's taste of Peru is the sleeper restaurant of 2020. The food is fresh and flavorful and makes me want to come back for more before I finished my meal.
The owner and chef Renzo Macchiavello immigrated to the States when he was 17. He started as a dishwasher in San Francisco and eventually moved to the LA where he attended the LA Culinary Institute. He had won several gold medals in competitions over the years before realizing he wanted to own his own restaurant and serve the food he grew up with and loved so much. He uses the freshest ingredients from local farms and fish markets and always purchases high end meat and poultry to bring the best flavors to the table.
I have been to the restaurant quite a few times now and I always have to get the Lomo Saltado either the plate or the wrap. They serve it two ways. If you’ve never had a Lomo Saltado, traditionally it’s like a stir fry with beef, onions, tomatoes and sometimes peppers. It’s usually served over a bed of french fries and white rice. His version has so much flavor and uses super high end filet mignon. You can tell because the steak melts in your mouth. He also serves it as a wrap. It has the same flavors but with a twist. It contains the steak strips, red onions, roma tomatoes, cilantro, rice but adds in beans and sweet potatoes fries instead of the traditional french fries.
While there you must order a shellfish dish. My two favorites are the Ceviche Mixto and the Arroz con Mariscos. The Mixto is fish, shrimp, calamari, mussels, and fresh scallops marinated in citrus juices. The fish and shellfish are so fresh and have the perfect texture. I love how all the seafood is served whole and not chopped up into pieces. It is so simple and so delicious at the same time! The Arroz con Mariscos is just as the name says. It’s a Seafood combination of calamari, shrimp, mussels and scallops on seasoned rice with cilantro and peppers.
Finally, I highly recommend any of his sandwiches with the side salad or yucca fries. He adds sweet potatoes, red onions, and avocados to make all the sandwiches creamy, flavorful and the perfect texture.
Truth be told, you can’t go wrong with anything on the menu. You can eat some delicious take out while not feeling guilty. Definitely add Renzo’s to your must try lists!
