17 Awesome Things Happening in August in L.A.


August in Los Angeles might mean the end of the Summer, but it's not over yet! Join me outside this month for free concerts, food festivals, restaurant openings, and more!

Week of 7/26-8/1

On Thursday, 7/29, what's being called the "official Summer Fair of Los Angeles" is kicking off at Santa Anita Park until August 22nd. Tickets include performances by tribute bands, carnival rides and games, a wine and seltzer garden, and more. Tickets are good from Noon to 10 p.m., but a day must be designated. FREE ADMISSION tickets are still available; otherwise, it's $12 for adults and FREE for kids under 6. Unlimited rides are an additional $40, and there are more than 50 to choose from.

Friday, July 30th, is the first KCRW Summer Nights Concert at the California African American Museum. The event begins at 7 p.m. and features KCRW DJ Aaron Byrd and Novena Carmel. Admission is FREE!

Sunday, 8/1, and every Sunday this month is the weekly Smorgasburg LA at Row DTLA. The street food festival-style market includes famed eateries like Tacos 1986 and newcomers like Go Go Bird (from Hinoki & The Bird) and The Bad Jew. Hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. with one hour of free parking included.

Week of 8/2-8/8

Monday, 8/2, celebrate the opening of a new restaurant with FREE Tacos. To celebrate their debut in Los Angeles, City Tacos will offer one free taco per customer on opening day from 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. It's located at the Shops at USC Village.

Thursday, 8/5, is the start of the new pop-up Moroccan-themed cocktail lounge at the JW Marriott Los Angeles L.A. LIVE. Hours at The Oasis are from 6 to 10 p.m. on the open-air pool deck through the summer on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evenings. Tickets are $90 for two, and it includes a pitcher of Signature Sangria and a Mezze Platter. Hotel guests can enter for free and purchase items à la carte.

Thursday, 8/5, also happens to be National Oyster & IPA Day! Head to Messhall Kitchen in Los Feliz for two mini pilsners for $6 or an Oyster and IPA Pairing for $24. Reservations are encouraged.

Don't miss your chance to enjoy summer under the stars at the Hollywood Bowl with performances like Tchaikovsky by the L.A. Philharmonic the weekend of August 6th. The concert starts at 8 p.m. and includes a fireworks show. Check out more shows at the Bowl here.

Saturday 8/7 is Spacca Burger Saturday, where Chi Spacca Restaurant in Hollywood is serving up decadent Smash Burgers and Fries ($16) from 12 to 2 p.m. Pre-order is available online, or just order in person. Fresh is best, and these are fired up upon ordering.

Saturday 8/7 also offers a FREE outdoor concert brought to you by Grand Performances in Downtown Los Angeles. The event starts at 7 p.m. and features Dilla and Talib Kweli.

Week of 8/9-8/15

Saturday, 8/14, is another KCRW Summer Nights Concert. This time it's with James Francies and KCRW DJ Leroy Downs at 7 p.m. at One Colorado in Pasadena. Admission is FREE.

Saturday 8/14 also offers another FREE outdoor Concert brought to you by Grand Performances in Downtown Los Angeles. The event starts at 7 p.m. and features Jacque Hammond and Qur’an Shaheed.

Week of 8/16-8/22

Friday, 8/20, is a special Friday free concert from Grand Performances in Downtown Los Angeles with Latin artist Katzù Oso from 7 to 9 p.m. As a reminder, it is all ages and outdoors.

Saturday, 8/21, is the last KCRW Summer Concert of the month at One Colorado in Pasadena. It features the Nature of Language and KCRW DJ Travis Holcombe. Once again, it's FREE!

Saturday 8/21 also offers another FREE outdoor Concert brought to you by Grand Performances in Downtown Los Angeles, but this time its daytime. The Soulection event runs from 2 to 10 p.m.

Week of 8/23-8/29

Friday, 8/27, is a Grand Performances Free Summer concert hosted by DJ Garth Trinidad. It takes place from 7 to 9 p.m.

Saturday, 8/28, is the last Grand Performances Free Summer concert of the month. It's from 7 to 10 p.m. with Chola Orange and Brain Story.

The weekend of 8/27 is one of my favorite ways to end August in Los Angeles: the 626 Night Market at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia. Admission is $5 pre-sale, and kids under 3 are FREE. The Night Market features food stalls, crafts, games, and more. Hours are 4 p.m. to midnight.
