The Impact of the Reconfigurable Space on Corporate Working Environments, Norman Widdowson and Rhema Dlokude, stated.
As corporations attempt to become more competitive by becoming more innovative and flexible organizations, they are also restructuring their workplaces in the form of open-plan offices and virtual teams. This research investigates the impact of the reconfigurable space incorporating working environments in the case of the manufacturing company, Kia Motors. The reconfigurable space, as defined in the paper, is a space that was specifically designed and planned for the purpose of meeting the needs of a certain culture, work style, or individual worker. The authors employ the sociotechnical systems' framework, which considers the social and technological aspects of an organization, and the notion of space as an organizational characteristic, or a way in which corporations are built, to determine the impact of the reconfigurable space in the organization.
The reconfigurable space is an important part of the organization, as it provides flexibility for the organization to function differently from the traditional way in order to meet the needs of the organization and its workers. The traditional office layout, which has no reconfigurable space, has become obsolete when it comes to facilitating innovative work practices and organizational restructuring. The authors employed a case study approach consisting of 12 semi-structured interviews to determine what impact, if any, the reconfigurable space has had on corporate working environments. The findings of the case study will be of particular significance to corporations in making decisions regarding the transformation of organizational culture and the reconfiguration of the working environment. For example, the reconfigurable space allows the organization to accommodate certain cultural demands, work styles, and individual needs.
