What do the world’s most most successful people all have in common?
They all have coaches. Gold medal athletes have coaches, world record holders have coaches, professional athletes have coaches.
Do they have coaches because they’re good, or are they good because they have coaches?
No matter what level of success an athlete has, they still have a coach. They have a coach to continue to refine their game, to keep their skills sharp, and to stay ahead of the competition.
What can a coach do for you?
Most of us aren’t professional athletes. Athletes have coaches who know how to coach their sport. The rest of us use coaches to help us build a life that is amazing.
The purpose a coach can serve for you is basically the same as for athletes. A coach can help you refine your game, keep your skills sharp, and stay ahead of the competition. They help you build a plan to navigate life. They help you get out of your head when you know you can perform better.
A coach is an observer from the outside. They see the patterns in you that are helping you or holding you back. The patterns that can seem so normal that you became blind to them. They ask the right questions to get to the bottom of why you do what you do, and why you may feel stuck.
Coaching isn’t Consulting.
You hire a consultant to tell you what to do, and you get the advice the consultant wants to give you.
You hire a coach to work side by side with you to help you name what it is you want. Together you come up with the best plan to get from here to there.
A good coach knows that the answers are already inside you, and they draw the answers out of you rather than telling you what to do.I’ve been advocated for coaching since before coaching was a “thing”.
I’m a coach, and still I use coaching. I’m personally working right now with Tom Kuegler and Jonas Ellison. No doubt, the right coach enters your life at the right time. I’m walking my talk when I suggest coaching to people.
When I talk about coaching, I sometimes hear two reservations:
- What can a coach tell me that I don’t already know? and
- I can’t afford it.
Coaches have value at any stage of the game.
Each time I started out in a new venture, I didn’t know what I didn’t know.
What’s the cost of this lack of knowledge? Time and money 💰. Whether you’re building a new business or are in the midst of a divorce, venturing down a new path always involves making choices that will have long term consequences.
Find a coach who’s an expert in the area you’re headed. There are people who have successfully navigated that path before you, and you can avoid a lot of pain and loss when you learn from them.
I get it, the process seems a bit intangible. It’s not like you have a new 72 inch TV to hang on your wall when you hire a coach (but you can do that too if you want!)Using a coach in the early phases of any venture is an investment that will be returned over and over. You can’t afford NOT to use a coach.
Coaches come in many shapes and sizes.
There are career coaches, spiritual coaches, health and fitness coaches, business coaches, and happiness coaches. You name it, if there’s a need, there’s a coach.
My specialty is life enrichment and healing. I help people overcome their limitations, fears, and physical ailments. Read articles from a selection of coaches, and when you find one that resonates with you, build a relationship with that person to see if they’re a good fit.
You want to feel inspired by them, and you want to trust the person to be able to push you beyond your comfort zone in a way that will work for you and your learning style.
Plenty of coaches online offer free webinars, eBooks, and email courses. Explore those resources to find the style that speaks to you. Most coaches work remotely through video calling, so there are no limitations to location.
When life feels stuck, your coach is a force to help you get things moving again.
“An object at rest stays at rest and an object in motion stays in motion…” Newton’s Law of Inertia
When life is moving fast and changing faster than you can keep up, a coach is a grounding force to keep you on track, to help you prioritize, and to help you filter out the noise.
Enjoy your exploration. As always, I wish you all the best
