Remembering Philip Seymour Hoffman
Born on July 23, 1967, actor Philip Seymour Hoffman was also a director. He is best known for films like Almost Famous, Capote, The Master, and Hunger Games. Considered talented and versatile, Hoffman was one of the most loved actors of his generation. [i]
Capote
Hoffman quickly gained a reputation for taking on complex and quirky character roles. In 2005, he won an Academy Award for best actor. He starred as Truman Capote in Capote. The character had learned of a Kansas family’s murder and began penning a novel about the case. This led him to form a relationship with Perry Smith, one of the killers on death row. [ii]

Hoffman is also well known for his jarring role in the 2012 film The Master. Co-starring with Joaquin Phoenix and Amy Adams, Hoffman brought to life the character of Lancaster Dodd. Dodd was the leader of a religious movement who met a World War II Navy veteran. The film depicts a realistic portrayal of post-World War II Americans. [iii]
Although it bombed at the box office bomb, Almost Famous still received widespread acclaim from critics and numerous nominations and awards. The film is considered a cult classic. Ranked the 79th greatest film since 2000, it won two Golden Globe Awards. [iv]

Philip Seymour Hoffman Last Days
Unfortunately, Hoffman struggled with substance abuse, checking himself into rehab at least twice during his career. In 2011, Hoffman was interviewed by The Guardian, during which he addressed his battle with addiction, saying,
Just because all that time’s passed doesn’t mean maybe [my addiction] was a phase. That’s, you know, that’s who I am. [v]
How old was Philip Seymour Hoffman when he died?
On February 2, 2014, Philip Seymour Hoffman was found dead on his NYC apartment bathroom floor. Autopsy results revealed that Hoffman had died from acute mixed drug intoxication. Hoffman was only 46 years old when he passed. [vi]
